Various Decoilers By StanGroup
A reliable decoiler is an important part of every sheet metal production line. Decoiler is where the whole process of fabrication begins, whether you use it in a line with other machinery or as a separate unit with a guillotine. In this article, you will explore three main types of decoilers that we supply on the Canadian market at Stan Roll Forming Machines
1. Manual Decoilers

Manual decoilers are the most straightforward and simple units you may encounter. They are designed for compatibility with other units, as well as for general coil handling. There are several upsides to a manual decoiler. One of them is simplicity. You do not need to worry about the electric system, the motor, or the belt-drive connection. These types of decoilers consist of several parts, which include:
- A. Frame
- B. Expandable Reel
- C. Friction Brake
The frame holds the whole system, the reel is designed to hold the metal tightly, and the friction brake prevents the coil from free-spinning.
Here is how the coil loading for this type of decoiler works:
At Stan Roll Forming Machines, we supply two main types of manual decoilers: open-ended decoilers and closed decoilers. Closed decoilers are usually designed to hold heavier coils. That is because the reel on this type of decoiler is supported from both sides. Open-ended decoilers, on the other hand, usually handle less weight. However, they are easier for coil installation.
Here is the step-by-step instruction for coil installation on a closed manual decoiler.
- Detach the friction brake
- Take the reel off the frame
- Insert the reel into the coil
- Expand the reel until it holds the metal tightly
- Use a crane beam or a forklift to put the reel with the coil back on the frame
- Reattach the friction brake.
And just like that, the coil is loaded on the decoiler.
Here is the step-by-step process of installing a coil on an open ended decoiler:
- Contract the expandable reel
- Install the metal coil on the expandable reel with a forklift
- Expand the reel until it hold the metal tightly
As you can see, the open ended decoilers do not take much time to install a coil.
2. Motorized decoilers

Motorized decoilers are largely more complicated than manual ones. The reason for that is because they are equipped with a motor, an electric box, and usually additional items like a foot pedal, VFD controls, etc.
However, they have a lot of advantages compared to manual decoilers.
And the first advantage is the decoiler’s ability to sync with the machine that excepts the metal. If your decoiler is connected with a rollformer, it makes it way easier for the rollformer to accept the metal, since it does not have to spin a heavy coil of metal anymore, all work is now done by the decoiler’s motor. The other advantage is reduced operator fatigue. With a motorized decoiler, the operator does not need to “drag” the metal to feed it into the rollformer, the unit will do all the work instead.
Motorized decoilers also can be open ended or closed. The procedure of the coil installation of the open ended motorized decoiler is the same as that of the manual open ended decoiler. With a motorized closed decoiler, there are a couple of additional steps that you have to take into account. Here is how the process works:
- Detach the belt from the reel
- Take the reel off the frame
- Insert the reel into the coil
- Expand the reel until it holds the metal tightly
- Use a crane beam or a forklift to put the reel with the coil back on the frame
- Reattach the belt (Make sure that the belt is perpendicular to the surface where the decoiler is installed. If it is not level, it might cause faster wear of the motor and the belt)
After following these simple steps, your decoiler will be safely equipped with a metal coil.
3. Hydraulic decoilers

For the last part of this article, let’s speak about hydraulic decoilers. These decoilers are usually significantly higher in price than manual and motorized ones, and there are reasons for that. First of all, hydraulic decoilers are generally designed to hold way more weight. For example, the D200M motorized decoiler by StanGroup is capable of holding up to 2,000 lbs of metal, up to 26” wide. However, a 26” hydraulic decoiler is capable of holding three times that weight, up to 6,000 lbs!
There are also some convenient features that most decoilers possess. One of them is an automatically expandable arbour reel. With this feature, you do not need to expand your reel manually with a handle or a special wrench. Instead of that, you will be expanding/contracting the arbour reel by pressing a button on a control box. In this way, it will be easier for you to reach the right tension in the reel to ensure proper coil handling.
Another convenience offered by hydraulic decoilers is the way they can be powered with different outlets. Most hydraulic decoilers are equipped with a VFD (Variable frequency drive), which allows you to operate them on both 1- and 3-phase power systems.

Conclusion
Finding the right decoiling solution is crucial for any sheet metal shop that handles metal coils. Whatever situation or problem you have - we are always there to help you find the best solution at Stan Roll Forming Machines.
